Description

This piece was first created for a woman who wanted to gift herself something that would help her return to a sense of peace. As a mother of three boys, she turns back to this poem on the days when everything feels full and overwhelming.

It is inspired by Wendell Berry and his poem “The Peace of Wild Things.”

It holds the reminder that we don’t always need to hold everything together. That there is a place within us where we can step away from control, soften into life as it is, and remember that rest is not something we earn - it is something we deserve.

Poem behind the piece

‘When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.’
